In which we learn about Elven boy scouts and refurbished gifts

Part 2!

A Shortcut to Mushrooms
Geography!!
English: "The line of the [Brandywine] River grew nearer"
Taiwan: "Anduin River grew nearer and nearer"
* A geeky detail to be sure, but if you refer to the maps of Middle Earth, mistaking those two rivers is sort of like mixing up the Rio Grande and the Mississippi.

In the House of Tom Bombadil
Cheshire Cat
English: "There was no sign of Tom disappearing!"
Mainland: "Tom was silently disappearing!"

Strider
Missing the point
English: "Do NOT use It again, not for any reason whatsoever!"
Taiwan: "Do not use this letter again, not for any reason whatsoever!"

Movie continuity?
English: "Renewed shall be blade that was broken"
Taiwan: "There is a broken sword at Rivendell"

Spies everywhere!
English: "He was white and shaking when they left him."
Taiwan: "His skin was very white, when they left him they shook hands with each other."

The Council of Elrond
Again!
English: "hunters--but hunters ever of the servants of the enemy"
Taiwan: "hunters--but hunters used to be the servants of the enemy"

Aww, the crucial line...
English: "'I will take the Ring,' he said, 'though I do not know the way.'"
Taiwan: "'I will carry the Ring.' he said, 'though I don't know how to do it.'"

The Ring Goes South
ROFL!
English: "Some of the scouts have been sent out already. More will go tomorrow."
Taiwan: "A troop of Boy Scouts have already been sent out. More Boy Scouts will head out tomorrow."

A Journey in the Dark
Wuss.
English: "The wolf that one hears is worse than the orc that one fears."
Taiwan: "Hearing the wolf's howl is more frightening than orcs."

I hope that was a misprint...
English: "At that moment there was a sharp twang. Legolas had loosed his arrow."
Taiwan: "Just then suddenly a snort rang out. Legolas released an arrow."

How encouraging.
English: "But going straight, without mishap or losing our way, we shall take three or four marches, I expect."
Taiwan: "If we can't make our way out or if we get lost, we'll probably have to walk three or four times, I think."

Proofreading again
English: "...to go on marching still for several hours"
Taiwan: "...to go on marching still for seven hours"

The Bridge of Khazad-dûm
Don't take up archeology yet
English: "We slew many in the bright--I think--sun in the dale."
Taiwan: "In the day I slew many of their--I think--suns in the dale."

Lothlorien
What good will that do!?
English: "Aragorn bound some soft pads of cloth at his side."
Taiwan: "Aragorn bound some pieces of cloth under his feet."

Gyah!
English: "and they say that you breathe so loud that they could shoot you in the dark."
Taiwan: "and they say that you breathe too roughly, they wanted to shoot you in the dark."

Farewell to Lorien
Whatever.
English: "But what I have heard seems to me for the most part old wives' tales"
Taiwan: "What we have heard are only stories mentioning old wolves"

Second-hand gifts
English: "To Legolas she gave a bow such as the Galadhrim used, longer and stouter than the bows of Mirkwood, and strung with a string of elf-hair."
Taiwan: "She then gave to Legolas a bow that had been used by the Galadhrim, longer and stouter than the bows of Mirkwood, with a wisp of elf-hair dangling from the lower end."

Cursed dirt!
English: "Though you should find all barren and laid waste, there will be few gardens in Middle-earth that will bloom like your garden, if you sprinkle this earth there."
Taiwan: "But if you sprinkle this soil in Middle-earth, then you will find the land there barren and laid waste, and will not bloom like your garden."

The Great River
Okay we're just making stuff up now.
English: "Stringing the bow and fitting an arrow he turned, peering back over the river into the darkness."
Taiwan: "[he] Strung the bow, fit an arrow, loosed his hand, and the sharp arrow flew over the river."

Ve must PAHMP YOU AHP
English: "They were far less heavy than any had expected."
Taiwan: "They were far more heavy than any had expected."

The end of Fellowship. Two Towers coming tomorrow!

Ah, so many fond memories...

Re: Brandywine vs. Anduin... well, Brandywine is supposed to be a perversion of Baranduin, which is not the same river as Anduin, IIRC, but at least they sound kind of the same. But IDHTBIFOM. (I've always wanted to say that.)

The three quotes from Farewell to Lorien are my favorites. ^o^

The one about the earth... it's almost like they're following the movie where it was a box of salt. :P

1) The sentence from the book said just "the River" instead of mentioning it by name, 2) the Brandywine is not at all connected to Anduin, 3) nor is it remotely close, seeing how it took the Fellowship months to trek to the Great River. I was just amused with the SHORTCUT (to mushrooms?) Frodo and co. suddenly took that cut their journey in half. =P

I like the "Do not use this letter for any reason!" myself, because it misses the point so very deliciously <g> But the best is yet to come... ;)

It's almost like "this message will self-destruct in 30 seconds" . . . but not quite. ^^;;
