The E3 dump, part 2!

Media! I have all these artworks in original OMGHUEG formats, but I doubt you'd need them from me.

Skyward Sword:
You can see a 5-minute walkthrough video of the demo here.
Artwork: Link and his birdie! | Zelda and her birdie! | That weird douche-y sword guy. Will we get a name for him this E3?
Screenshots: Yeah yeah, get all your Avatar/How to Train Your Dragon jokes out now | There's something you should know. I'm not right-handed. | 3 | Really like the texture & design on this spi--er, Skulltula? | When I hit him, DIAMONDS fly out | 6 | Zelda~~ :3 | 8 | 9 | 10 | I like those crystals in the background and want to slash them for Rupees | EVERYBODY HAS WEIRD LIPS IN THIS GAME. Nintendo what's wrong with your modelers.

Ocarina of Time 3D:
Hey look, they actually made a bit of new artwork instead of just vector-tracing all the pre-existing concept art.
Well there's this Lisa Frank-looking thing. | Young Link | Young Zelda | Ganondorf

Games Nintendo didn't talk about in their conference:
Animal Crossing: NO NO MORE. Although they ARE kind of tempting with their cosplay costumes and swimming and DAMMIT NINTENDO I SAID NO
Paper Mario: Eh, not much to say about it that's not a given. Paper Mario's cute and great, looks great in 3D, what's there to note.
Kirby Wii: Looks solid and decent until I got to the KURIBO'S SHOE POWER. Holy crap, Kirby's going to kill the world.
Rhythm Heaven: I really enjoyed the previous handheld ones, but this trailer is really uninspiring and the music doesn't even seem synched to the gameplay. Not to mention the songs aren't nearly as catchy as they used to be if this is representative of in-game music.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games: I don't care a lick about this, except to point out the screenshot of Sonic riding a horse. That is the weirdest thing I've seen today.
Kirby Mass Attack: Looks like hilarious chaos. They seem to have come up with a lot of good ideas to do with this weird-ass gameplay concept.
Professor Layton and the Last Specter: I've got nothing to say. Gonna buy it, gonna be awesome.

There's gonna be a couple of developer roundtables supposedly tonight and tomorrow night, so expect perhaps a bit more news ramble then.

God they made Ganondorf ugly XD Love it though. Was hoping for more new Ocarina of Time art.

I like how the weird new guy in Skyward Sword has that hipster hair. Do you have Link and his bird in anything bigger? He's so tiny and beautiful. ;.;

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2011-06-08 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much all the OoT3D art they've published are like high-res traced versions of old art. Sloppily traced, too, if you look at em close up. I didn't expect them to even have any new art.

Boy do I have it bigger. How does a 7000x5700 17meg png (http://www.liuart.com/misc/Wii_ZeldaSS_1_char01_E3.png) sound? Lemme know when you're done so I can delete that off my server.

I was at least a little pleased for slightly better versions of the old shit. But yeah, I will also take new stuff. :D

And SWEET thank you! I couldn't find a decent version of that. Now I have Link's pretty man face all nice and large. I grabbed it. Thanks a bunch!

Link's [...] man face

I uh... I believe we've already ruled that extremely debatable (http://nendil.livejournal.com/157179.html).

You took out my qualifying "pretty"! *pets Link* XD

Oh yeah, the roundtable is being liveblogged here: http://wii.ign.com/articles/117/1173797p1.html

I lol'd at "Miyamoto was surprised by how much of the game he'd forgotten when he replayed it recently...He saw some lines in the game he thought were funny, forgetting he was the one who wrote them." because I can so see that. He'd probably be like "LOL I am FUNNY"

Zelda is so pretty in that outfit! Makes me want to make a cosplay costume, except not for me. And will Ganondorf ever not wear a carpet?

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2011-06-08 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same! Why do I have to have a completely non-Caucasian face! XD

Ganondorf sorta not-wears a carpet in Wind Waker (http://images.wikia.com/zelda/images/a/a2/Ganondorf_Wind_Waker.png), although I'd accept it if you want to call that a slightly-tailored carpet.

OMG that ... is like a magical garment that turns his arms into EXTRA LEGS.

Yeah, I look super-horrible in a blond wig. :X
Her dress looks pretty comfy, too!

Skyward Sword: If you hadn't captioned that image "Zelda and her birdie", I wouldn't have realised that it's Zelda in it. It's such a completely different character design and outfit to any of the other Zelda's.
The weird douche-y sword guy does look rather evil. Wild Mass Guessing: it's Vaati!
The art style in the trailer reminds me of Wind Waker. It's the combination of the almost cell-shaded pastel colours and the way all the buildings are crooked. The game engine itself... I was thinking that they'd taken the TP engine and made it more like WW, then I remembered that the TP engine was originally the WW one. So they've kinda merged the two together?
Aww, it turns out that he's jumping into the air to land on his tame Cucco. I preferred it when he was just leaping off the edge into the unknown, kinda like the ending to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Anyway, enough rambling. Here's an interesting and surprising tidbit of news instead, from The Register: the footage of 3rd-party titles shown during the Nintendo presentation was actually from PS3 and Xbox360 consoles. I don't think I've ever heard of a console manufacturer doing that before.

Kirby Wii: WANT. Also, yay ridiculously oversized sword!
Rhythm Heaven: it's Japanese craziness! Very tempting.
Kirby Mass Attack: ...is it just me, or does this look like a Gameboy Colour game? Not that that's a bad thing. In any case, WANT.
Professor Layton: damnit Nintendo stop making me spend money!

It's because she's not a princess yet :P

Wild Mass Guessing: it's Vaati!

Nope. (http://nendil.livejournal.com/169940.html)

I was thinking that they'd taken the TP engine and made it more like WW, then I remembered that the TP engine was originally the WW one. So they've kinda merged the two together?

Engines don't really work that way. It's just a matter of how much they've changed up animations and other specific issues. The engine is just sections of code that say "when I get these certain inputs, perform certain tasks (like slash a sword or climb up a ledge or make AI react)".

...Aren't you a CS guy? Do I really need to explain this? :P At any rate, I wouldn't be surprised if the Skyward Sword engine is much changed from TP's due to all the Motionplus and other new features.

the footage of 3rd-party titles shown during the Nintendo presentation was actually from PS3 and Xbox360 consoles.

Meh, it's powerful enough to look at least that good. Code is code; this console finally supports shaders and stuff that everyone else is (has been) doing so there's no reason it can't pull off anything technically.

Rhythm Heaven: it's Japanese craziness! Very tempting.

You should definitely check out the previous games. I think the GBA one was never localized (not that it's very hard to understand), but the DS one was.

Kirby Mass Attack: ...is it just me, or does this look like a Gameboy Colour game?

Well, it's a DS-not-3DS game, and they're using all the same Kirby sprites from like GBA era (Capcom syndrome?), so.

Bah. New Wild Mass Guessing: It's a re-incarnation of Vaati! See, he's even got the same style of cloak! :P

On engines: The engine will likely contain a lot of the code for the animations and interface as well - things like "when I lock on this character take this texture and place it above that character" and "when an enemy gets destroyed do this fancy smoke effect". Not all of that would be scripted, and I'd argue that a lot of the scripts for basic events also counts as part of the engine.

Anyway, that comment goes back to when I first saw a demo of Twilight Princess, and while most of it looked and behaved like a brand new game there were bits in it which were straight out of Wind Waker (the way baddies sorta explode into smoke when they die, for example). So it was mildly amusing to watch the trailer for SS and see some more of WW re-appear from under the TP stuff.

I do see this sort of thing at work - we've got one component which is all shiny and new and behaves mostly nothing like the previous version of it. If you go digging through the code however while most of it's been heavily modified over the years you'll still find a few pieces of a 20-year-old architecture that doesn't exist anymore. And there's various oddities in the configuration and how it behaves which again date from 10 or more years ago.

On the graphics: it'll certainly be up to xbox 360 levels of graphics, but I doubt it'll match the PS3. Then again it doesn't have to - the main advantage of the insane number-crunching power of the PS3 appears to be less that it can render stupidly-detailed scenes and more that devs no longer need to resort to cheap tricks like clamping the draw distance and billboarding sprites to get those stupidly-detailed scenes. Remember, even the 'cube was capable of some amazingly detailed games (Starfox Adventures, Crystal Chronicles) as long as you didn't look too closely at how they were achieving it.
