My head asplode.  How do the buttons on that thing work?

However, I am drooling at 1up.com's description of the demos, especially the last one.  This is something that needs to be experienced to "get", I'm sure.

Edit: When I play Zelda on that thing, I'm totally going legitimate and playing it left-handed. And fail because I'm completely rightie.

Edit edit: Here's a promo video to show you (in simple terms) what this madness is all about. It is making me grin so wide.

Ahahah! So true!

Imagine playing Harry Potter with that thing. Or Wind Waker. Heck, I even swing the controller around right now every time I play a tune. I think it'll add all new levels of immersive...ness. Immersion. You know.

IGN has some pretty darn cool ideas (http://cube.ign.com/articles/651/651224p1.html) for how they can apply this to all kinds of gaming genres.

[identity profile] om-nom-berries.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I admit the controller interests me. I've spoken to a handful of people about it so far (all men) and the reaction was mixed. It really is a move that is unpredictable. I just don't know what the average public will say about it, but I suppose the iPod Shuffle look will help in that, hoping that Apple can maintain its own brand integrity, since that can now affect Nintendo (one of the major downsides, I guess, that in taking another's look Nintendo now has less immediate control over the public's bias of the design)

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've been hearing, this'll probably be a big appeal to female/old/disillusioned/nongamers. At least, the Japanese ones. Imagine parents seeing some kid play a game by swinging around this stick at Best Buy, it'll sell like hot cakes.

So far I think the biggest objections to it are "my arms will get tired" and "I'll look like a retard", both of which has the same answer in that article I linked: you're not actually flailing around to play the games (unless you want to). It's perfectly comfortable to keep your hand on your lap and make little wrist movements, much like a mouse.

(Are you still in California? Because I is back!)

[identity profile] om-nom-berries.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, interesting, on both accounts. I hadn't thought of the promo appeal.

And naw, I left California Sept. 1st (and flew Delta who is, of course, now bankrupt) I kinda miss it right now, but I had to come back to start school anyway.

That is... strange. Reminds me a bit of the Philips CD-i, and it's infra-red controller.

*reads article*

Wow... just wow. Full marks to Nintendo for actually having the guts to go and do something like this, and it sounds like they've managed to make it work.

When I play Zelda on that thing, I'm totally going legitimate and playing it left-handed. And fail because I'm completely rightie.
That's a point: I wonder if they'll make a left-handed control stick add-on for it?

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is something that could very well be implemented badly. Heck, it blows my puny little mind to think about how you'd even START to program for something like that. But since it's Nintendo I have absolute faith that they'd do it beautifully and make it able to survive a tac-nuke strike to boot. (See: DS) Lots of developers are very enthusiastic (http://cube.ign.com/articles/651/651304p1.html), too.

I wonder if they'll make a left-handed control stick add-on for it?

I sure hope they do, just to be fair. Else design it so that somehow it feels comfortable yet is still interchangable. I can assure you that the whole thing'll get an ergonomic overhaul before it's launched, though.

(have now watched the video)

Okay, you just know that in the next Zelda you won't be mashing A to whack the monsters.

Left handed yo

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm talking about.

Of course, this means that I won't stand a chance against my sister in Zelda, as she's left handed.

Make her play Zelda (or Sheik). Then you'll be even.

Am trying quite hard to get the video to work... not working yet... Does this mean that I'll have to slash the romote to kill stuff?
XD

It's in quicktime, right-click and pick "save as" on this link http://cubemovies.ign.com/cube/video/article/651/651334/revolutiontrailer_091605_qtlow.mov then open it after its downloaded. It may be a bit slow to download as I think IGN's under a minor slashdotting.

Why yes, yes it does.

I'm glad that I've become partially ambidextrous!

As for the gamers complaining that they'll "look like a dork": You're already playing a video game, Captain Suave. (In fact, you're posting on the Internet about playing video games.)

My faith in Nintendo is unwavering, and this thing is going to be awesome like the Zapper was awesome. My inner five-year-old is overjoyed.

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Might this help what with your hand condition, if it's not a personal question? Would wrist wiggling be better than too much button pressing?

[identity profile] simhuman.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely, and the one-handedness is a blessing. I'm pretty well thrilled, because I should be able to play games like a normal person again.

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome. Nintendo magic comes through again!

Holy cow

[identity profile] adilande.livejournal.com 2005-09-18 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
That thing is like... totally sweet.
Ho.Ly.Cow.
I sound like a middle-schooler. On pixie stix!
You, that thing, and the promo video just made my weekend. XD

Like, the techie inside me understands all the premise behind how it works, gyroscopes and bluetooth and all that. But the kid inside me is like "OMG, I'm ACTING the game! The future is here!"
