So, I've come to a bit of a dilemma concerning my site's art content. I'd like to have a display of more professional-looking, higher-quality stuff, and weed out the older, not as well-done works. But, nostalgia and consideration for the fanbase (and my big fat ego) make me reluctant to remove even those 4-year-old fossils. For example, the nekos--I've stopped bothering with them for a long time now, but they still seem to be fairly popular among my audience (what little of them there are) for some reason. Yet it certainly isn't much use for a serious art gallery.

One thing that bugs me right now is that, the casual surfer who comes upon my site would most likely browse it in order by the navigation links at the bottom. However, the best works I'm doing right now are in the "misc" gallery, which I can't exactly bring to the front of the queue. Yet to get there, you'd have to get through four other galleries first, three of which haven't been updated in over a year... Not that I wouldn't like to do something new for them, but still, even if I do, most of the art in there are outdated and amateur-ish.

What I'd like to have is something that looks/sounds more professional and is a good reflection of my current art skills, that I wouldn't be embarrassed to plug on a job application (and web portfolios are quite important in the right industry). Here are some options I'm considering, yet each has its drawbacks...

1) Make a "Portfolio" gallery and stick it in the most prominent spot, leaving everything else where they are.
This is the easiest option, but it doesn't make the website itself any less "fannish", even if I give out only the url to the portfolio gallery for professional purposes. There's a saying that goes "a portfolio is only as good as its weakest piece." It can be beneficial to show the progress I've made throughout so many years, but there's just too much frivolous stuff up there right now.

2) Re-organize (and probably re-layout) the site, sorting things more chronologically so new, best art would be at the top. Inferior works may be "hidden" (not put on frontal display) via an "older art" link.
Well, for one, I haven't really thought out how I would go about that yet in terms of organization. And I think having the art sorted by topic category is much easier to browse than a strict chronological thing. I'm already advertising my newest works as much as possible with my current (categorical) layout, I think.

3) Prune everything and leave only the top-quality art.
The thing with this is that I'd have to be pretty brutal, and whole galleries would be cut. I don't mind this particularly, but there is a part of me that would like to give the visitor anything and everything they could possibly want to see. Still, I could manage that by posting everything in the journal and putting up only the good stuff on the site. This would also involve some site revamping.

4) Make a separate website, possibly with its own domain name.
Feels kinda redundant, and kinda "cheating"-like, as if I'm leading a double life with a lamer bunch of art hidden away elsewhere. But maybe that's just me. Still, it'd be a bit of an extra hassle to maintain both, and I'd have to decide between which url to advertise when filling out web profiles and stuff.

I suppose I'd just like to hear from as many people as possible what you'd like to see, or think is a good idea. And if you're going to make suggestions (please do), just don't say something like "Aww, you can't take down ____ all your stuff's so great!" ^^;;; As much as I like ego boosts, that's not a solution here.

Of course, I'm just overstepping myself a bit, seeing how I need to DRAW more better-quality stuff first... ^^;;
