THE TIME IS COME (E3 post part 1)

Got my Youtube stream, got my cup of tea, got Notepad open for snarking/rambling/SQUEEING. LET'S DO THIS THING.

Damn, Reggie looks scarier than ever. Please don't kill us Reggie :<

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
- Starting out with Zelda! They must have other good stuff in stock :D
- Oh shi we're cel-shaded again? That bodes well. It looks almost exactly like Wind Waker though - not that that's a bad thing, but I was kind of hoping for a little more distinctive art style.
- Oh god Miyamoto's cosplaying again XD
- Actually, looking at the demo, it's got some very nice lighting effects that Wind Waker obviously didn't have. Well, we ARE in the next generation now. Actually it looks like a combination of Wind Waker and Mario Galaxy shaders.
- Sword beams are back XD The Motionplus gestures look quite fun - I wouldn't have expected any less. But the controls are not quite perfectly responsive, especially that damn shield bash...
- A Button is jump and dash? Wow, innovative Zelda controls XD
- So we've got Swordfighting, Bowling, Archery, and Pilotwings from Wii Sports Resort... well, as long as we don't have to do basketball it looks like you do basketball to throw bombs overhead. Well... as long as we don't have to ride a bicycle?
- Okay, the whip is pretty awesome XD Everybody's going to be demanding Castlevania Wii now.
- Release next year DX Oh well, at least they're making it more better.
- Disappointed that the trailer doesn't show anything about the story... but it's better to have good gameplay, I guess. As long as they have "less story" over "lame story".

Wow, Mario Sports Mix is quite pretty. It's not a must-buy for me but Kevin might want it. Hopefully they're pretty close to the real sports' rules rather than simplified mini-games.

Is Wii Party the new replacement for Mario Party? I won't miss 'em if Mario gets to do more interesting things... like volleyball and hockey. XP

Just Dance 2 - actually, that looks kind of fun for a workout, as long as the controls are responsive. Reminder to self to look into it later.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn - SCREW DAT, still. Never touching a Golden Sun game ever again because the dialogue turns my brain into mush.

LOL at all those trendy young girls raising their hands for Goldeneye being "the greatest shooter of all time". This new Goldeneye sure has classic... straight out of N64 graphics. Seriously Activision. Seriously.

Yesss, Epic Mickey! I was expecting to not hear about it until Disney does their presentation (whenever that happens), but naturally it's a pretty big (exclusive, no less) title for Nintendo to wave around.
- The art style looks pretty great, although it's the most impressive in the stylish cutscenes. Nonetheless, I like how much depth the environments have. It looks better than I expected for a third-party Wii game, which is great :)
- The paint-based gameplay looks good :) I've read about it months before, so it's not new to me, but basically, you can use paint/paint thinner to paint in/erase objects, and the way you interact with the world has sort of a good/evil scoring system that affects your character.

Kirby's Epic Yarn
- SAKURAAAIIIIII
- Kirby's got his angry eyebrows on! About time they bring him back for a game!
- IN LOVE WITH THE ART STYLE ALREADY. And OMG, there's going to be so many fan-crafts of this.
- OH MY GOD YOU CAN INTERACT WITH THE ENVIRONMENT BY PULLING THREADS. <3 <3 <3

Dragon Quest IX - I intend to buy it because I heard good things about it. That's about it.

Metroid: Other M - I don't think I'll be getting it - I'm just not attached to Metroid that much, and I have other things on my priorities list that I'll be lucky to get finished. Like Mario Galaxy 2

Oh shi, they're finally telling us what Retro has been working on! And it is Donkey Kong Country Returns! Looks just as beautifully fun as the original DKC games, and I spent a LOT of time on those back in the day. And that sunset silhouette level makes me grin so wide :D

3DS - THIS IS RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS.
- 3D depth slider is a very good idea, of course I'm not ever going to have it on anything besides MAXXXXX. Unless game developers who don't know what they're doing set the offsets way too wide
- It has an analog pad! AND motion sensor AND gyro sensor!? IT'S TOO MUCH
- Of course, dual stereoscopic cameras so you can take your own 3D photos. That'll be nice to have without having to buy a specialized stereostopic camera :D
- Can play 3D movies! That's a pretty sweeeeet feature, WAY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE RISING MARKET. Okay, NOW I'm extra-excited.

OMG KID ICARUS UPRISING ON THE 3DS. THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO PUT OUT A LONG-RUMORED AND LONG-AWAITED KID ICARUS GAME EVERRRRRR. AND WHY DOES IT HAVE BETTER AERIAL DOG FIGHTS THAN STARFOX. (maybe it's just a cutscene.) WHY AM I SO EXCITED I DIDN'T EVEN LIKE THE ORIGINAL KID ICARUS. OMG OMG OMG.

3D version of Nintendogs... AND CATS. XD I just might be sucked into getting this. :3

Holy cow, Nintendo completely blew it out of the water this year, even with me expecting great things just from Zelda and 3DS alone. :D~~~~~ I can't wait to link you guys to the trailers for all these games; this post will be updated when they're up. Trailers up! Most of them are from the conference footage, I'll covertly swap them with direct-feed videos as they come in. Nintendo was nice enough to provide convenient links to everything!

I had to go get food, so all I saw was the Zelda stuff.

New Goldeneye by Activision? Ew.

Kid Icarus? Finally.

3DS scares and confuses me. 3D tvs in general confuse me. Dan got to see them a few years ago because Google had them. I felt like a caveman discovering trains and telephones... but you know, all of this in a really good way.

I like that Zelda is like a cel shaded Ocarina of Time-looking game, and that you can shoot stuff out of the sword again. I hope Zelda is in it. I want game art!

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I really really hope Zelda isn't just Twilight Princess Zelda cel-shaded. I think actually a grown-up Zelda in a version of the Wind Waker/Spirit Tracks Zelda dress would be pretty cool :D Mainly I just want to see those hair feather things.

What no links/picspam?

...wait, 3DS? Is that what I think it is? *googles like mad*

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2010-06-15 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I said they're coming later. XP Nintendo hasn't even updated their press site yet.

True, I'm just used to my friends page being taken over by E3 picspam every year. I suppose I'm just impatient :)

As I type [livejournal.com profile] sarshin has just posted a 40s trailer for The Skyward Sword. I'm amused by the cel-shading, given the very realistic styling of the concept poster from the last E3.

Okay, if half of what I'm seeing about the 3DS is true then it is made of solid Awesome. It'll be interesting to see how well the screen works - given that it's unlikely to require glasses it'll have to be something like those 3D cards you get with the corrugated plastic strip, and I bet that gives a lot of eye strain.

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2010-06-15 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Fine, put up trailer links. Are you happy now? :P

The 3D screen'll be like this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostereoscopy). The "sweet spot" thing may sound annoying, but fortunately you won't need to move your head much when playing a handheld.

Yay trailers!

Shame about the Youtube suckiness, but it's not your fault. I blame the Internet for settling on "almost good enough".

Zelda: Shiny! Want! Want shiny!
I do hope they're taking full advantage of the Wii Sports Resort engines, though hopefully since it's an adventure game rather than a competition they'll loosen the sensitivity a tad.
Is it me or does this Link seem rather girly?

Goldeneye: Yeah, I'm with you on the graphics. The Gamecube had better than that. Then again, it's likely to be the only way you'll ever be able to (legally) play Goldeneye on the Wii given the mess with the rights to the original (I believe the main reason it's not on the Virtual Console is because so many different people own bits of the rights to it).

Kirby's Epic Yarn: WANT!
I don't believe I've ever seen a game quite like that before - the closest in terms of art style would be the cow racing in Wii Play, and in that it was purely a texture with no interactivity. This actually reminds me a bit of Yoshi's Island: it's the same sort of ignoring all the supposed rules about what things are supposed to look like, and just designing something so completely loveable.

Metroid: Now that looks to be rather different to Prime's control scheme and viewpoint. I'm quietly confident, as it's not the first game I've seen which has a switchable first/third-person viewpoint. Project Eden did that, and both made sense at different points: third-person gave you better spatial awareness, first-person made it easier to track things in front of you. Technically Zelda also has a switchable viewpoint, but in Zelda you only switch into first-person for projectile weapons so it doesn't really count.

Kid Icarus: Impressive. I was about to dismiss the "HD-quality" claims of the 3DS, but if that trailer is actual gameplay then I may have spoken too soon. Hmm... thinking about it, with today's technology it's perfectly feasible to cram the processing power of a N64 or even a Gamecube in a handheld form factor, and still have a reasonable battery life (which is the hard part - shinyness of graphics is inversely proportional to battery life).

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2010-06-15 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This Link looks just about exactly like Twilight Princess Link who was already rather girly. I think they're making his voice deeper and deeper in an attempt to compensate. :P

Kirby's always been really good with experimental art styles since Kirby Canvas Curse. Well, I guess they didn't actually do anything artsy inbetween that one and this one... but it doesn't surprise me at all.

Consider the fact that the 3DS is rendering PSP-quality graphics twice.

There's one screenshot from this new game that made me think that Link's looking a little Disney Princessy. If the game has a cut scene where he sings a song about the land beyond the clouds (accompanied by animal friends and this game's version of Midna), I'll die happy.

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But but but Link is mute D:

[identity profile] lisa-s.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Fine, bring reality into the fantasy ;-) Uh...his fairy companion can do the singing, and he'll do an interpretive dance with the animal friends.

[identity profile] ctrl-a.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
tl;dr (sorry, not big enough Nintendo fan)

But... why didn't you like Golden Sun? I thought they were fun.

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's why I cut it. XP

Golden Sun and its 50 PAGES OF DIALOGUE THAT GOES NOWHERE can go to hell. I know people say the gameplay was fun but I've tried twice to go through it (playing it and watching a screenshot walkthrough) and both times my brain turned into mush before I got onto the world map.

[identity profile] ctrl-a.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I totally don't remember anything like that. But then again, I put up with lots of games that are endless dialogue between other stuff. ^^;;

[identity profile] nendil.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 05:14 am (UTC)(link)

::shakes head::
Maybe this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGEYxsCR-3c) will jog your memory.
[Yes][No]
...
I was prepared to put up with aimless animu dialogue too but Golden Sun takes it to a new level.
::sweatdrop::

[identity profile] ctrl-a.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, after this conversation, I can't watch that without laughing. ^^;;

I guess it was probably painful at the time... I hate even normal beginning-of-game sequences. I seem to remember FFIV being pretty bad, too, but maybe that was just because of the bad translation. ("But Mysidians were so helpless...")
