HP Tarot thumbnails - Death

-----

"After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure." - Albus Dumbledore

This card represents not literal but metaphorical death, as a transformation where one stage ends and a new one begins. Harry goes through a necessary and cleansing death in both senses, and comes out renewed and fully a master over death.

Notable art bits:
1. The traditional Death card depicts Death riding calmly from the unconscious left toward consciousness on the right. I guess here it is sort of Dumbledore acting as Harry's guide to give him direction in the afterlife limbo place thing. But he's not Death, of course.

2. Death bears a banner decorated with the Mystic Rose, signifying life. I figured I might as well give Dumbledore a fabulous matching embroidery on his robe, and I figured a phoenix was more meaningful than the rose in the HP world.

3. In the background, a ship sails on what may be the River Styx, ferrying souls towards the dawn of a new day. As Dumbledore says, "We are in King's Cross, you say? I think that if you decided not to go back, you would be able to... let's say... board a train."

4. I had planned to include the flayed-baby-soul as an equivalent to the different aspects of humanity at Death's mercy, but it looked too macabre and attention-grabbing. I like the card better as a peaceful one.

5. I originally envisioned the color scheme as white, but obviously that's pretty boring to draw on. So it became gold because gold is purdy uh... highest state of alchemy achieved. Also goes with the general color tone of King's Cross in sunlight.

6. Definitely watercolor style for this one :) Perhaps solid "oil" painting for the characters, and wispy "watercolor" for the malleable environment.

(Does this even look like a Death card at all...?)

1. I'm surprised that the Death in the traditional card is wearing plate armor... it just doesn't fit with what my mental image of a hypothetical Death would look like (though to be fair my expectation is very Discworld-inspired). Anyway, there isn't really a direct match for a good/calm Death in HP, but Dumbledore does fit the role of a guide at that moment.

2. Not enough detail to make out (which is probably the laptop screen's fault - while it's perfectly usable in sunlight, it's definetely not a photo-quality screen with the sun on it), but I like the idea of the phoenix.

3. I was just thinking that it should be a train, and then I read the rest of your comment.

4. I like the peacefulness of this card. It makes a nice change from the others you've posted recently, which have a rather dark/depressing feel to them.

5. Possibly slightly sepia rather than gold... I'm thinking of the Travel wallpaper from Microsoft Plus (thought actually that might have been B/W - I'll have to dig it out and check).

6. Hmm... my preference would be for something more detailed, though given the usual heavy thumbnailing I'll have to wait for the real one to decide. Possibly detail the train and the archwork nearby, but let the rest go indistinct - presumably since this is all in Harry's mind, only the bits he's concentrating on will have any real detail.

The card doesn't really look like Death, but when you spot that they're in King's Cross you realise that it is in the sorta afterlife/waiting room place (as IIRC that's the only time Dumbledore is in King's Cross in the books).

'Preciate the thorough feedback. :)

1. I think that it's meant to be Death as one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, not that I know whether they wear armor or not.

4. B'aww, even The Empress (http://nendil.livejournal.com/153820.html)? :P

6. Yes, there will be some detail - the background won't be completely a blur. Hey Brit dude, got any pics of King's Cross for me to reference? ;)

4. Hmm, I must have missed that one. I'll try and come up with some feedback for it.

6. No, sorry. It's the far side of London from me, so I've only been there a couple of times when heading up north.

I'm on a different computer now, and the thumbnail now looks slightly green rather than gold. (it also looks darker too, but the laptop screen *was* in direct sunlight which washes out everything). Weird.

Oh, and I've uploaded the wallpaper I was talking about to http://thomasmccorkell.me.uk/lj/nendil-travel.jpg . That's *not* King's Cross in it (I don't actually know which station it is), as the roof of King's Cross only has two arches and has brick walls.

That's a cool picture, thanks! I imagine I don't have to make it precisely King's Cross anyway.

True, but having found a photo online it appears that King's Cross is actually quite different to that one. Wiki has a pretty good picture of inside the station: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kings_Cross_Station_Platforms,_London_-_Sept_2007.jpg . It's a terminus, so the entrance is behind the photographer.

Ooooh, I think you should use the dark arches like in the Wikipedia picture. It naturally gives the card a more death-ish color scheme, while not being all ominous and scary. Ah, how I love those big open spaces in Western train/subway stations.
