A survey quiz thing.

I'll probably put this up on the About page for my website later. Save me some explanatorial time =)

100 questions for an artist

1] What is your pen name?
Nendil.

2] How did you get the name?
Elwen dubbed me thus. It's supposed to mean "water friend" in Quenya =)

3] Do you use PC or Mac?
Windows. Screw what they say about Macs being better for graphics, I see nothing wrong with a properly souped-up PC.

4] What software you use most often?
Photoshop 7. Now that I've got Painter 7, hopefully I'll make more use of it too =)

5] Do you use mouse, or tablet?
I can use both, but tablet's obviously better by far =)

6] The color you use most often is?
I think dusty/lavender blue and dark red find their ways into my pics most often. But I don't particularly do it on purpose, they're just good for moods.

7] What area of the pictures do you put most effort into?
I think I agonize equally over all aspects of the picture, at least all the aspects I think of. If I've neglected it, it means I haven't learned enough about it to consider it.

8] How long does it take you do draw a picture?
A full, finalized picture, anywhere from 10 to 50 hours nowadays. Let's say the median is 20.

9] Do you keep your rough drafts?
Yup. Just in case something goes wrong... and also to see how much I've improved on them in the finished pic. =)

10] What kind of font do you use most often?
I... don't use text... except for watermarks and such.

11] What's the dpi when you scan?
150 dpi for stuff that's not going to be modified, 300 dpi for stuff I'm going to work on on the computer.

12] Do you do anything else when you're drawing pictures?
Play music, IM, frequently distract myself by browsing websites.

13] How many pictures do you draw in a month?
Like, 0.75 ^^;; Plus various doodles.

14] What kind of paper do you draw your pictures on?
The paper in my sketchbook, notebook paper, and occasionally blank printer paper. Nothing special.

15] What kind of paper do you use for sketches and drafts?
Same as above.

16] How long does it take to ink something?
Half an hour's enough. That's the fastest part of the process, if I do it at all.

17] Do you do doujinshi or original manga?
No--too much thought to try and lay out comic panels.

18] Do you like doujinshi? Is it fun making it?
They're fun to look at sometimes. Making it is far beyond my scope right now.

19] Ever submitted anything to a magazine?
No,

20] Did it get published?
So no.

21] Who are your favorite artists?
Pro artists: Anry (WORSHIP), Jonathon Earl Bowser, KAGAYA, Linda Bergkvist
Fan artists: Min "Keiiii" Kwon, [livejournal.com profile] jeykama, Michelle "sherant" Heran (well, she counts as pro. But I like her for her fanart ;))

22] What's your favourite Anime/Manga?
Sailormoon is always my love =) There are various animes we've watched in Anime Club that I really like the art for (Witch Hunter Robin, Wolf's Rain, Scrapped Princess, etc.), but they don't catch my passion.

23] Favourite Character?
In anime? Tsukino Usagi and Sailor Saturn. Also there are characters in various anime (such as ones listed above) whom I'm fond of, like Michael Lee, Tsume, and Shannon Casull.

24] Any artists that you'd like to draw like?
The people on that list up there, pretty much. But with my own style.

25] Do you buy books a lot?
No. Library is better.

26] Did you ever buy a book to inspire you to draw?
I have artbooks of Sailormoon and Lord of the Rings, and I'd get artbooks of other fandoms I like too if I come across them. They don't inspire me as much as serve for reference material, but they are nice. ^__^

27] Any video games you enjoy?
Super Smash Bros. Melee, all Legend of Zelda games (OoT most of all), all Pokemon games though I no longer have time for it, Dance Dance Revolution, Soul Calibur II, various other Nintendo games... I'm a Nintendo whore.

28] Any favourite characters from video games?
Link and Zelda, as if you didn't know.

29] Do you have a favourite writer?
I have many writers I like and admire, but not really so many I'd actually call favorite. I'll pass...

30] Any books you really enjoy?
Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Guilty pleasure: Piers Anthony.

31] Do you write fanfics?
Yes, but my pace is so hopelessly glacial that I rarely ever manage to crank one out.

32] Any music that you often listen to while drawing?
Often something mellow and instrumental, but if it's late at night and I need energy, then DDR Nonstop Megamixes always do the trick.

33] Any recommended songs?
Far too many. Right now I'll post three must-hears: "Celtic Legend" by Paul Spaeth, "Into the West" by Annie Lennox, and "Ancient Hero" Wind Waker OC remix.

34] Any websites that you totally admire?
The websites of those artists I listed up there... unless you mean in terms of design, in which case no.

35] Do you have any sites you want to go everyday?
Straight Dope (particularly the message board), my journal (and friends), a few fanartists' sites. If I had the time, I'd also visit the CGTalk and Sijun forums everyday.

36] What is your dream site like?
My portfolio site is pretty close. ::shrug:: Except I need a "money shot" image on the front page to entice visitors, and I'm never going to get around to it.

37] Do you like your own art?
Yeah. I wouldn't be satisfied with it if I didn't like it. I can pretty much sit and admire a recently-finished piece for hours ::ego::

38] What do you enjoy watching on TV?
I don't watch TV, but if I did it would be pretty much The Simpsons and Whose Line is It Anyway? And Star Trek TNG reruns, perhaps =)

39] Favourite celebrity?
Uhhhhhh... Shigeru Miyamoto! And those pro artists listed above, they're celebrities in their fields ;)

40] Favourite color?
I say blue, but I pretty much like all colors.

41] Favourite food?
Seafood, esp. shrimp and shellfish and squid.

42] Favourite drink?
No particular favorite. I like Pepsi, Cherry Coke, and non-carbonated fruit-flavored drinks, but I'll drink other stuff too.

43] Any places you like to shop at?
I never go shopping. Fry's, maybe. ::geek::

44] Can you cook?
Not very much, but enough to manage. I can stir-fry vegetables and make soups, and cook rice and noodles. Just don't much know what to do with meats.

45] Any programs you use often for email? Any electronic pets?
I use Outlook Express--vulnerable to stuff, I know, but I'm too used to it. Electronic pets? Have those even been in fashion for the past few years?

46] Are you a computer expert?
Not *expert* per se... I know more than the average joe and enough to keep my computer in shape, but poking around under the surface is a bit beyond me.

47] Want to become a professional artist?
Yes please.

48] Any other jobs you're interested in, besides an illustrator?
Animation, modeling, pretty much anything to do with CG is fine with me.

49] Any other specialities besides drawing?
Can figure skate, DDR, and taiko to a moderate degree. =) I think I'm a decent writer if only I can get stuff out.

It's not a hobby, but who wouldn't like a good flick?

51] What's your favourite movie?
Lord of the Rings, hands down.

52] Have you ever entered art contests?
Not really, since like junior high or something. No time and drive. Oh yeah, and once for high school Anime Club where I was the only entry. XP

7th grade. 03/22/97, to be exact. Hm, anniversary's coming up... =)

54] Anything that you often use as a reference when you draw?
Uh, pics of whatever I'm drawing, duh.

55] Have you met any of your fans online?
Fans...? I've met people through my art, yes. Fans...?

56] You have a lot of pen pals?
Pen pals...? I'd say the definition of such is rather loose nowadays. I have friends I only communicate with through Livejournal, does that count?

Not a lot, just a couple or so. Always be glad to convert more though =)

58] What time do you usually go online?

65] Where do you often hang out?
In front of my computer ^^;;;

Plenty whose skills aren't up to par, but am I supposed to name names? ...Oh, I know! Thomas Kinkade, of course.

67] Situations in which you really don't like being online?
Sometimes I want to take a nap, and I don't feel like putting up a reason in my away message and I don't think people will have anything important to say anyways...
That only happens about twice a month, though. =P

68] Situations in which you hate when it comes to having websites?
Uh... theoretically, getting spammed? I don't really mind the drawbacks, though.

69] Something that makes you really glad that the internet exists?
What DOESN'T make me glad that the internet exists? XD

70] What about things that make you NOT glad that the internet exists?
...Oh. Well, uh... spyware, I guess. OH AND! The spread of stupidity. I swear, the internet encourages disregard for education and general common sense.

71]What's the first picture you've ever shown to the public online?
Either the Neko Senshi or the chibi symbol series, I don't quite recall which. Let's just say the whole batch of stuff on that Geocities site which is still up there because we don't have the password to take it down. XD

72] Do you still have that?
See above. And it's all on the AFC, too. XD

73] Has your drawing style changed a lot?
It doesn't feel like it to me, very much, but yeah, I'd have to say so.

My skill for realistic coloring and shading has grown a lot. I don't think my line art has improved as much.

75] Have you experienced artists block before?
Yeah, when you JUST CAN'T GET SOMETHING RIGHT

76] How did you escape from it?
Leave it alone for a long time. Sometimes scrap it and start over.

77] What happens when you have artists block?
Uh, see above. I have bad days, sometimes.

78] Any artists that have influenced you a lot?
Naoko Takeuchi was the first. Her influence still remains in the long, pointy fingers I draw =P Nowadays, I try to learn from the artists I admire. Oh, but my art teacher would definitely be the artist who's influenced me THE MOST.

79] What made you start drawing?
After tracing a lot of Sailormoon pics, being struck by inspiration and thinking "hmm, I'm getting the hang of this, maybe I can pull it off".

80] What made you want to get a website?
I believe it was Elwen and Anna pushing me to put my stuff online. =P If you mean my *own* website/domain... that came from a need to have a professional portfolio for display.

81] Where did your site name come from?
"Aquafraternal" refers to water brother-hood. (That's Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.) "Moonlit Engravings" I just pulled out of my ass. XD

Far too many people disregard them. I disregard those people.

88] Do you have good eyesight?
Not at all. Want Lasik.

I dunno. Probably someone who can (meaningfully) sign a book (artbook, preferably) I own, because then it'd make the book nifty.

90] What would you say to that artist when he/she autographs for you?
"Thank you"'s pretty much it.

91] Do you have fans of your art?
Fans...? Well, probably, sort of. People like the Neko Senshi, I guess.

Have tried it once. Too hard ^^;; Generally I don't have the time.

I got a B+ in the painting class I took at college. Probably because I wanted to paint realistic stuff and not be all "creative" and "expressionist" and generally artsy-fartsy.

94] Did you take art lessons other than from school?
My private teacher taught me more than 4 years of schooling would ever have.

95] Have you drawn a manga?
